Incisal Edge: Dental Innovators Hall of Fame

2022-04-27T21:16:41-05:00

IT'S WELL-KNOWN that significant gaps exist between what students learn in dental school and the realities of everyday practice. Those gaps have widened in recent years, perhaps most significantly by the unprecedented pace of technological progress. It's onething to acknowledge the ever-louder concerns of dental students; it's another to actually do something about it.Dr. Edward F. Rossomando not only did something--he also developed a vision for making it happen, then rallied the biggest, mostpowerful players in oral health-care technology around it. De. Rossomando is the founding father of CRET: the Center for Research &Education in Technology, dedicated full-time to introducing the latest [...]

Correspondence Between William Gies And Simon Flexner To Guide A 21st Century Dental Curriculum

2021-11-11T13:21:40-05:00

Edward F. Rossomando University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine, Farmington, Connecticut, USA Abstract After W.D. Miller proved a causal relationship between microbes and dental caries and periodontitis, the repair and replacement of damaged or lost teeth resulting from microbial activity dominated 20th century dental practice. As dentists already treat some nonmicrobial diseases, I will focus on craniofacial malformations, the group of nonmicrobial diseases usually called birth defects. Some examples include dental dysplasias, cleft lip and [...]

Correspondence Between William Gies And Simon Flexner To Guide A 21st Century Dental Curriculum

2021-11-11T13:21:52-05:00

1 INTRODUCTION It would be difficult to identify a report that has been as influential in guiding 21st century dental practice as the Gies report published in 1926.1 While his conclusions are well known, what was always of interest to me was what he was thinking and who was he consulting with as he prepared his report. Recently, I uncovered a correspondence between Gies and Dr. Simon Flexner, Director of the Rockefeller University in New York. A comparison of this correspondence with the contents of his final report suggested to me that Dr. Flexner's response altered his thinking and could have [...]
